Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperative Assoc., Inc. the electric distribution provider for 20,000 members in Crawford, Erie, Venango, Mercer and Warren counties celebrates 73 years of service. The people who purchase the electricity are owner-members of Northwestern.

During 2009 Northwestern REC plans to rebuild 58 miles of electric distribution line to increase reliability. Projects will require a $4 million capital investment.

In January Northwestern REC retired $406,564 to the membership in Capital Credits. Total Capital Credits retired amounts to over $16.2 million.

Northwestern REC owns a light commercial/industrial business center located south of Cambridge Springs on Route 86. The Cambridge Business Center offers pleasantly wooded lots and full amenities. Lots front on a paved public road. Shovel ready lots include infrastructure. Reasonable prices and rural advantage make these lots ideal for a new or expanding business. The Cambridge Business Center is an excellent location for a regional warehouse, an R & D site or a call center.

The Go Electric, It’s the Smart Choice campaign offers consumers an efficient, cost effective way to heat and cool their homes. Combining an air source heat pump, an electric thermal storage furnace and our off peak rate is proven to beat the cost of fossil fuels. Northwestern REC is also the local distributor of the ACADIA all climate heat pump.

Load management offers members free service, installation and replacement of electric water heaters in return for controlling demand. Working together, the 9000 participating members help control costs for the entire cooperative membership. Northwestern REC is in the first year of a three year project to deploy an automated meter reading system (AMR).

Northwestern REC is governed by a ten-member board of directors elected for three year terms. The election process includes nominating meetings and culminates with the election at the annual meeting held the first Saturday in August.

Northwestern REC is headquartered in Cambridge Springs and the office is open M-F, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Northwestern REC maintains 2,600 miles of distribution line and employs 65 local people. Northwestern REC, People You Can Count On.
